The Delta Dental of Arizona Foundation and Arizona PBS are pleased to announce the winners of the first children’s writing contest, part of a larger Healthy Smiles campaign to promote good oral health in children across the state. As part of the program, children from preschool through third grade were invited to write and illustrate a story about healthy teeth, healthy gums and a great smile.

Through the competition and a series of free events, the nationwide campaign focused on encouraging family involvement in good oral health practices by focusing on the importance of brushing twice a day, changing toothbrushes regularly and visiting the dentist twice. From February through September, a series of free events were held in rural areas including Bouse, Bullhead City, Grand Canyon, Lake Havasu City, Parker, Prescott Valley, Safford, San Luis, Somerton, Tucson and Yuma. Each event featured PBS characters, educational crafts, activities and giveaways for children aged 8 and under. Local dentists also offered free dental exams and fluoride varnish treatments.
