An alleged cult leader, whose beliefs ranged from nudism to polygamy, was arrested and charged with rape and false imprisonment on Friday April 15, as he and his cult were accused of abusive behavior towards their members.
Eligio Bishop of the alleged cult Carbon Nation was brought before a judge in DeKalb County, Georgia, for a preliminary hearing of his case, with the judge refusing to set bail for Bishop, largely due to the seriousness of the charges, according to the judge FOX 5 Atlanta.
Bishop allegedly raped and falsely jailed a woman before using explicit photos he owned of her and sending them to people without the victim’s consent Daily Beast reported.
“We teach sex education and we believe in nudity. And that’s one of the charges to be brought against my boss, which is for revenge porn, but the woman that was here, the woman that was here, she agreed to actually release it for sex education, it’s not just like porn, it’s for educational purposes,” said member Daylin Armstead.
Carbon Nation as a group has largely believed in polygamy as well as veganism, and members of the group have been forced to give Bishop their financial information in exchange for learning his teachings.
The group has built a following online, with over 25,000 followers on Instagram and 90,000 on YouTube. Their online content varies from educational videos to music videos, and they have used the platform to solicit donations from fans. Bishop has used this platform to deny the crimes he is accused of.
“They want to crucify me, they want me dead, hatred surrounds me, you can feel it, just like any other prophet – only me, I am the return of Christ,” he said. “We are here to be woken up. So this isn’t going to turn out the way people think it’s going to turn out.”
Former member Erikka Carroll said she went to an island in Costa Rica to learn more about the group’s teachings, only to experience physical and emotional abuse during her stay.
“These people who are [still in the cult]her only hope is for [Bishop] get locked up now. To get him locked up. It’s too many things he got away with,” she said.
