SAVANNAH, Georgia (WSAV) – Families now have the option to spend some more time outdoors at Memorial Health’s Dwaine and Cynthia Willett Children’s Hospital of Savannah.
The new Sunshine Park and Healing Garden opened on Friday. The design will help stimulate the children’s senses with an interactive digital wall, sensory play boat, musical instruments and a flower garden.
“Something like that does not exist. There is no such playground or healing garden anywhere in the southeast, âChildren’s Hospital donor Cynthia Willet told WSAV NOW. “As I always said, this is a first-class children’s hospital and that is the icing on the cake.”
Many of the patients had the chance to see the hospital for the first time on Friday after having seen it being built from their windows for months.
“It’s another wonderful day here at the children’s hospital,” said Willet. “To know that people can get out of the clinical realms and come out and have peace and reflection or play or pray.”
“It’s just not the toys, it’s just not the boat, it’s just being outside and enjoying life,” she added.
Kristen King, Child Life Manager at the hospital, says her top priority in designing the garden was to make it accessible to all.
âRegardless of whether a child with restricted mobility, sight or hearing, they will find something in this outdoor area that invites them to relax and play. They purposely brought in aromatic scents from flowers they were working on with a landscaper, âKing said.
“So really unique touches that you might not be able to see, but children can experience them,” she added. âThat’s why they have some of the sound features, a ramp so we can use it to get on the boat, whether a child is in a wheelchair or has their IV pole. It really becomes very inclusive. “
âIt’s for everyone. It’s for the siblings, for the child, and invites the whole family to share a moment, âsaid King.
The ribbon cutting was rounded off with a visit to Leopold’s Ice Cream.
