Epic, Malta’s oldest telecommunications company, is working to build the strongest network ever for both its customers and Malta as a whole. While Epic wants to provide a stronger service to all of its subscribers, it also wants to help improve Malta’s rankings in the Digital Quality of Life Index, published late last month.
In the results of the Digital Quality of Life Index 2021, Malta ranks 59th in the world for Internet quality and 30th in Europe. Malta also ranks 43rd in the world for Internet affordability and 26th in Europe. This index is based on a global survey of the quality of digital wellbeing in 110 countries around the world.
Epic’s Executive Committee took this ranking very seriously and came together to discuss the current network modernization program and how this will help improve Malta’s ranking in this index.
During the meeting, the committee talked about the fact that since the rebranding, Epic has focused on one main goal: to provide a great network for all of its subscribers at a great price. As part of its modernization program, Epic is deploying the latest generation of network infrastructure that offers best-in-class performance in terms of capacity, coverage and quality. This infrastructure is also future-proof and enables the use of new technologies such as 5G without massive overhauls.
Epic’s modernization program also aims to upgrade the backhaul network and introduce additional Epic Fiber locations to meet current and future capacity needs. The network modernization program envisages an investment of more than 40 million euros that will pave the way for the introduction of Epic 5G. In addition to paving the way for 5G, Epic has invested in improving coverage in several locations such as Mellieħa, Ħal Tarxien, Għajnsielem, Sliema and Xgħajra, with more locations to be served in the coming months.
The program began with the announcement of the latest strategic partnership that Epic has entered into with Phoenix Tower International (PTI). This was followed by the recent announcement that Ericsson has been selected as Epic’s RAN (Radio Access Network) provider bringing the far-reaching benefits of Epic 2G, 3G 4G, 4G + and 5G to Malta. As part of the new partnership, Epic will leverage Ericsson’s technology leadership to completely modernize its existing network.
“A ranking like this shows that our network modernization program is actually relevant. We will continue to build Malta’s strongest network by delivering technology that is generations ahead, combined with super-fast speeds, from the comfort of any Epic customer, anywhere, ”said Tamás Bányai, Chief Executive Officer of Epic.
