In honor of political activists, we would like to dedicate this year’s InsiderNJ Policymaker’s List to the late Abigail “Abbie” Fair in Chatham Township, who worked to conserve North Jersey’s mighty natural resources during their lifetime.

As a co-founder of the Great Swamp Watershed Association and a long-time member of the local township committee, Ms. Fair continued the work of Helen Fenske in saving the Great Swamp – the source of the Passaic and Raritan Rivers – from development.

A water attorney for the Association of New Jersey Environmental Commissions (ANJEC) for more than two decades. Ms. Fair died on May 17th in Massachusetts at the age of 81.

I wrote, this is 2005:

Appointed to the Township Planning Board in 1977, Ms. Fair resigned from the Township Committee in late 2004 after serving five or three year terms in an elected office. She spent her public career identifying and sustaining the connection between residents and natural resources, and saw quality of life … as fundamentally linked to the Great Swamp Watershed. Whether it was a planned four-lane highway on Shunpike Road, the original Sterling Properties project of more than 125 units on Shunpike and Green Village Road, or residential units in Green Village, from her earliest days on the Planning Committee, Ms. Fair with development projects that would have permanently changed the character of the community and the region.

Friendly to the press, eager to educate, and always substantial, Pennsylvania native Abigail Fair left the legacy of a politician who was so strong in her elected field – so intellectually unbeatable – that she was re-elected over and over again, despite the odds.
