Taco Bell Testing Vegan Chalupa Shell



Business Insider reports that Taco Bell is testing a vegan chalupa bowl. The shell is made from pea protein and is being sold in one place for the time being.

“We have long been a food disruptor, and this time around, it’s no different,” said Liz Matthews, Taco Bell’s global chief food innovation officer, in a press release. “We’ve seen our industry follow consistent patterns, but we know that consumers are looking for creativity and desire in this area. Whether someone craves plant-based protein, crispy chicken or sticky cheesy, we have something that is not only tasty but also unique.

The vegan Chalupa bowl will be available through June 27 at a location in Irvine, California.

A traditional chalupa bowl is made from crispy fried chicken. The vegan chalupa option can be made dairy-free for a full vegan experience.

With its new hot sauce recycling program, Taco Bell is taking another step towards making all consumer-oriented packaging recyclable, compostable or reusable by 2025. The company also recently announced a plant-based protein test.
