Colorado Governor Jared Polis and his current husband Marlon Reis recently got married in an all-vegan wedding. The celebration included a vegan meal prepared by vegan chef Chloe Coscarelli and her team, as well as bespoke vegan suits designed by Colorado-based menswear tailor Machete & Sons. The couple, who got married together after 17 years, opted for a wedding that lived up to Reis’ values as a vegan and animal rights activist. The wedding also marked the first gay marriage of an incumbent governor in the United States.
The lunch reception menu created by Coscarelli included vegan sausage boards with vegan cheese, pepperoni slices, crackers, grapes, olives and fresh figs. The buffet lunch included rosemary and cashew nut roast, butternut squash mac and cheese, roasted carrots with gremolata, miso kale, sweet corn jalapeño lasagna, and peach and basil caprese skewers. For dessert, the chef served a 12-layer lemon-vanilla wedding cake with white flowers.
“It was an honor and a privilege to cook the vegan wedding of Governor Jared Polis and First Gentleman Marlon Reis with my great team,” said Coscarelli called on Instagram. “Congratulations to the most beautiful couple. And thanks to my chefs … for not sleeping in a week to make everything perfect. “
The vegan wedding suits from Jared Polis
Polis and Reis also had their suits made from vegan and cruelty-free materials by the local tailor Machete & Sons. Surprisingly, the men’s fashion industry still relies heavily on materials of animal origin, including threading for sewing clothing, which is traditionally hand-waxed from silk or with beeswax.
“Most classic men’s fashion has not changed much in terms of materials since the 1930s and even the Victorian era, so the buttons are often made of animal horns, the fabric is wool, the canvas inside the jacket is made of horsehair or goat hair” , Machete & Sons co-founder AJ Machete told Media company 303 magazine.
The wedding suits eventually took about 50 hours to make, and machete replaced traditional materials with fabrics like linen and animal-free thread. Machete worked with Polis and Reis to design the pieces because the couple wanted suits that were versatile enough to wear for other occasions after the wedding. The resulting suits were classic 1930s style tuxedos with unique Art Deco detailing on the cuffs and vibrant, oversized bow ties.
For the wedding, Machete also created looks for the children of Polis and Reis – their son Capsian and daughter Cora – that go well with their fathers’ ensemble. Machete designed a suit for Capsian similar to that of his fathers, but without a suit jacket. For Cora he created a flower girl dress that goes well with the men’s suits.
Vegan celebrity weddings
While this was the first known vegan wedding by a U.S. governor, many others in public have hosted their own cruelty-free wedding. Last Christmas Eve, actress and vegan activist Pamela Anderson married her bodyguard Dan Hayhurst in an intimate backyard wedding. The celebration included a decadent vegan, two-tier triple coconut cake topped with a glass deer ornament, white carnation, and a glittering heart.
In 2018, vegan entrepreneur Kat Von D hosted a vegan goth-style wedding party with Leafar Seyer in Beverly Hills. The celebration included stylish hor d’oeuvres and a five-course meal of dishes such as spicy corn empanadas, corn tortellini, and a vegan roasted harvest, as well as a dramatic red velvet castle cake adorned with gold lead and spiers. For Von D’s wedding attire, she chose a luscious red wedding dress by LA-based designer Adolfo Sanchez with a dramatic train, full sleeves and a cape.
